Beyond its fossils, Maria Island truly lives up to its name as a wildlife haven. Wombats are especially abundant here and are a common sight—they're most active in the late afternoon (from around 3 or 4 PM onwards), often seen grazing in grasslands and along forest edges. You may also encounter wallabies, echidnas, and a rich variety of birds, including the endangered swift parrot and the Cape Barren goose. The surrounding waters are home to dolphins and seals, and the island also protects a population of Tasmanian devils. When observing all wildlife, please remember to keep a safe distance, remain quiet, and never feed the animals.
